Foundational Health Pillar #3

Staying Hydrated to Improve Your Health

One of the simplest—yet most overlooked—aspects of health is proper daily hydration. Every cell in your body requires adequate hydration to function at its best, yet so many of us are severely, chronically dehydrated. This is why we prioritize and teach how to drink enough water each day and supplement with electrolytes when necessary. It’s a simple thing, but so very important to help you look better, feel better, and heal better!

Making Hydration a Daily Practice

Water makes up ~65% of your body mass, so it’s no wonder how dehydration can have an all-encompassing negative effect on your body—leading to sickness and disease. Proper hydration, though so simple, is foundational for allowing your body to function the way it was designed.

Key Foundational Health Hydration Principles

  1. Drink Enough Water Daily. Aim to drink 1/2 your ideal body weight in ounces of water per day. If your day includes intense exercise that makes you sweat, aim to drink even more than this goal to replenish your body.

  2. Hydrate Gradually and Consistently. Drink water consistently throughout the day—don’t just gulp large amounts of water at once. Hydration is a constant, gradual process of giving your cells the water they need.

  3. Drink Filtered Water. Make sure you’re drinking filtered, high-quality water to avoid common toxins such as chlorine, fluoride, microplastics, and other chemicals.

  4. Add Electrolytes. A critical component of hydration is replenishing your body’s electrolytes—Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, and Magnesium. You can get these minerals through eating fruits and vegetables and drinking water with high-quality electrolyte mixes.

Lab Testing & Interpretation

How do you know if you’re properly hydrated? Common signs and symptoms of dehydration often don’t show until it’s far too late. Luckily, lab testing can reveal biomarkers that indicate your body’s level of hydration so you can take action before the symptoms show. Check out our Foundational Health Lab to get started!

Hydration FAQs

Have questions about how to make sure you’re getting enough hydration each day? Check out our Hydration frequently asked questions:

  • Aim to drink ½ your ideal body weight in ounces of water per day.

  • The ideal level of electrolytes to consume varies from person to person, but the latest science indicates our bodies need:

    • 4–6 grams of sodium per day

    • 3.5–5 grams of potassium per day

    • 400–600 milligrams of magnesium per day

These are best consumed through whole foods like fruits and vegetables, but electrolyte mixes can be used to fill dietary gaps. High-quality electrolyte mixes like LMNT or mixing a pinch of high quality salt into your water are both great options.

  • Anything is better than nothing, but we recommend Sentry Water Filters.

  • Sugary beverages and alcohol can dehydrate your body very quickly. Soda (even diet) and especially sugary alcohol drinks are particularly harmful.
