Holistic Nutrition and Building a Healthy Diet

Let’s face it, the world of nutrition is complicated. Everywhere you look, there’s opposing research, fad diets, and ever-changing rules on what is and is not healthy. It’s no wonder many of us feel lost on our journey of eating healthier to look, feel, and heal our best. Our goal at Foundational Health is to make this journey easier by getting back to the basics of natural, holistic nutrition.

We’re Here to Make Nutrition Simple

Though nutrition is a critical component of overall health and wellness, eating well does not need to be complicated. At it’s simplest level, food is fuel. More importantly, food is information. The food & supplements you choose to put in your body tell your cells whether to develop disease or build a foundation of long lasting health.

Key Foundational Health Nutrition Principles

  1. Prioritize Whole Foods. Aim to consume 90% of your calories from unprocessed, whole foods. Foods where you can actually understand the ingredients on the label or better yet, don’t require a label!

  2. Emphasize Food Quality. Look for high quality whole foods: organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised, no or low added sugars.

  3. Build Meals Around Protein. Pick the protein for your meal first, and build the rest of the meal around it. Aim for .75-1.25 g of high quality protein per pound of ideal body weight per day depending on muscle building goals.

  4. Fruits & Vegetables are God’s carbs: This is where the large majority of your carbohydrates should come from. Don’t fall for clever labels that tell you processed carbs are a healthy addition to your daily nutrition.

  1. Fat can be healthy: Healthy fat will NOT make you fat. Fats from high-quality whole foods like avocados, pasture raised eggs, 100% grass-fed meats, & high quality A2 casein dairy these fats are incredibly healthy and will not cause weight gain or make you sick. It’s the low quality fats from processed foods and grain-fed conventional meat that cause health challenges.

Lab Testing & Interpretation

When it comes to nutrition, it’s hard to tell where you need to go if you don’t know where you’re starting. As Dr. Kevin likes to say, “If you’re not testing, you’re guessing!” This is why we offer lab testing and interpretation services for a number of biomarkers to help inform your nutrition decisions.
